On June 13, 2024, at 14:00, a signing ceremony was held for the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the development of Welo E-Bike, a shared electric motorcycle platform in Chiang Mai. The MOU was signed between the Traffic Police Division of Chiang Mai Province, the Northern Thailand Hotel Association (Upper Region), and Toyar Digital (Thailand) Co., Ltd., a private company established under Thai law, specializing in digital transportation solutions.
Participating in the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) were Colonel Jan Sopa, Director of the Traffic Police Division of Chiang Mai Province; Mr. Paisarn Sukjaeroen, President of the Northern Thailand Hotel Association (Upper Region); and Mr. Lei Bo, CEO of Toyar Digital (Thailand) Co., Ltd. (Welo E-Bike) Also present were Colonel Paisarn Nanta, Deputy Commander of Chiang Mai Provincial Police, and Ms. Nattasita Srimanat of Toyar Digital (Thailand) Co., Ltd., along with other distinguished guests at the Smile Lanna Hotel, Chiang Mai Province.
Mr. Paisarn Sukjaeroen, President of the Northern Thailand Hotel Association (Upper Region), stated that the association has been continuously addressing environmental issues in Chiang Mai. In collaboration with Chiang Mai University, the association has been sending food waste from its member hotels to the university, which converts the waste into biogas. This biogas is then used to power various vehicles within Chiang Mai University.
Furthermore, to address the increasing environmental issues and promote public transportation in the Mueang District of Chiang Mai Province, there is an urgent need for innovative and sustainable transportation solutions. By leveraging technology to enhance public transportation options, reduce carbon emissions, and improve the quality of life for residents and visitors in Chiang Mai, the Northern Thailand Hotel Association (Upper Region) is collaborating with Toyar Digital (Thailand) Co., Ltd. (Welo E-Bike) to develop, implement, and manage a public, environmentally-friendly shared electric motorcycle platform in Chiang Mai. This initiative aims to promote public transportation, meet the needs of users for convenient and rapid transportation, and comply with the traffic regulations of Chiang Mai Province.
Toyar Digital (Thailand) Co., Ltd. will pilot the use of shared electric motorcycles, starting with 2,000 units at Chiang Mai University and 3,000 units around the city of Chiang Mai. This initiative will allow residents and tourists to experience and test the service before rental rates are established. The pilot phase is expected to last approximately two months. It is anticipated that this will effectively address the needs of Chiang Mai residents and provide greater convenience for tourists traveling to Chiang Mai.
Ms. Nattasita Srimanat, Chief Marketing Officer of Toyar Digital (Thailand) Co., Ltd., stated that Chiang Mai is currently facing significant challenges with air pollution, one of which is caused by the use of fuel-powered vehicles, leading to increased carbon dioxide emissions and particulate matter in the air. Toyar Digital (Thailand) Co., Ltd. (Welo E-Bike) is aware of this issue and has therefore initiated a pilot project for a public electric motorcycle platform. This project directly addresses the problem and also helps promote a reduction in reliance on gasoline-powered cars and motorcycles.
The company’s goal is to provide a public transportation option that is both convenient and fairly priced, greatly enhancing travel mobility. In addition to comfort, the initiative also aims to contribute to making Chiang Mai a more environmentally friendly city. The company’s platform is designed to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in alignment with government policies on air pollution reduction, creating a beautiful and eco-friendly environment.
The company’s project will leverage advanced digital technology, utilizing an innovative digital platform through the integration of advanced transportation management systems. The goal is to reduce road congestion and enhance safety and flexibility in managing the public electric motorcycle system with real-time data, aiming to provide a convenient and enjoyable public transportation experience. In collaboration with the Northern Thailand Hotel Association (Upper Region), the project will ensure that tourists receive convenient and timely service information, making their stay in Chiang Mai a memorable and satisfying experience.
Mr. Jettiniphat Atthapriyankul, Business Development Manager of Toyar Digital (Thailand) Co., Ltd. (Welo E-Bike), representing the Welo electric motorcycle, stated that Toya Digital (Thailand), a subsidiary of Toyar Digital PTE Singapore, is focused on developing environmentally friendly innovations and personalized public transportation options. The company is introducing a shared electric motorcycle platform, powered by data, to Chiang Mai.
For Chiang Mai, the second-largest city in Thailand, with a population of 1.5 million in the urban area and an average of over 9 million tourists in 2023, the public transportation system currently includes buses, songthaews, tuk-tuks, and motorcycle taxis, as well as private cars and motorcycles. These modes play a major role in daily travel, yet the usage rate of public transportation remains below 3.67%.
The introduction of the shared electric motorcycle platform offers a sustainable transportation option with zero carbon emissions. It provides flexible transportation and bridges gaps in travel within Chiang Mai, offering a convenient and enjoyable way for tourists to explore the city. Integrating the electric motorcycle platform with the Chiang Mai transportation system supports the city’s goal of becoming a smart city, filling gaps in the current transportation network, and promoting sustainability. This initiative enhances the tourism experience while aligning with urban development goals, delivering environmental benefits such as zero carbon emissions, reduced noise pollution, and a healthier environment.
